We are recruiting postgraduate students:

One PhD or MPhil student is to be admitted to study in theory the physics of quantum coherence control in solid-state systems and fundamental issues in quantum physics. The topics include (1) quantum many-body effects in mesoscopic spin baths, (2) ultrasensitive quantum metrology, (3) novel geometrical phase effects, and (4) novel phase transition phenomena. Required is good training in quantum mechanics, solid-state physics, optics, and computational physics at the undergraduate level.

One PhD student is to be admitted to study in theory and in close collaboration with experimentalists novel and exotic optical phenomena in solids, especially in those emerging materials (such as topological insulators, graphene, MoS2 and other purely two-dimensional materials). The topics include (1) nonlinear optical effects in topological insulators, (2) extreme nonlinear optics in the THz waveband, (3) strong-field physics in novel materials, and (4) electro-optical devices for information technologies. Required is good training in quantum mechanics, solid-state physics, semiconductor optics, and computational physics at the undergraduate level.

Two PhD student is to be admitted to study in an experimental project of quantum coherence control using optically detected magnetic resonance (ODMR) and applications in sensing. The project will involve photon detection of magnetic centers in nanoparticles under control of microwave pulses and using the ODMR to sense local chemical, temperature, and magnetic environments with nanometer-scale resolutions.  Required is good training in quantum physics, solid-state physics, optics, and experimental physics at the undergraduate level. Interest or backgrounds in biology are good add-ons.

For introduction to our previous works in the related fields, please be referred to the publications list and the research page. You are invited to apply for the studentship, if you are an honest, strongly motivated, hard-working, and easy-to-collaborate person. A formal application should include a CV, statement of purpose, and references. For exceptional candidates, we will nominate you to compete for the Hong Kong PhD Fellowship. For details, see http://cerg1.ugc.edu.hk/hkpfs/index.html Applicants are encouraged to contact the supervisor for better mutual understanding. Information about the formalities is available in the department admission webpage.

We welcome motivated undergraduate students to join us to acquire some early experience in real-life research, usually in the FYP capacity.
