Solar Eclipse

Total Solar Eclipse 2017

On 2017 Aug 21, a total solar eclipse could be observed within a band across North America. The path of totality passed from the Pacific coasts to the Atlantic coasts within the United States. This is the first total solar eclipse that is visible across the whole contiguous United States since the one on 1918 Jun 8.

In summer 2017, the Physics Department of the Chinese University of Hong Kong organized a study tour for Physics students. Another tour was jointly organized for High-school students and university Science students by the Science Faculty of CUHK, Hong Kong Science Museum, and the Education Bureau. The participants of the two study tours had the precious chance to witness this astonishing event. They have collected a number of photos and video clips of the total eclipse with equipment for solar observations.

This website serves to provide some basic knowledge related to the Sun and the solar eclipse. Some of the photos taken during the trip are used here for demonstration.

You might find out more information about the study tours here. The tours also included visiting the Grand Canyon and several research institutes.
