Director's Remark

Programme Director' s Message

Thanks for reading the Biochemistry website.

The Department of Biochemistry, now the Programme of Biochemistry, was established in 1971. Over the years, we have established a strong programme in research and teaching. Major research activities of the affiliated staff include: genomics and bioinformatics, protein sciences, molecular cell biology, neuroscience and nutrition and natural products. Our Centre for Protein Science and Crystallography is a leading research centre for protein research. It contains the state-of-the-art equipment from protein purification to 3D structural analysis and biochemical and biophysical studies.

Our teaching programmes include B.Sc., M.Sc., M.Phil. and Ph.D. degrees in Biochemistry. In our undergraduate training, we aim at providing the highest quality of teaching of Biochemistry which enables the students to possess, when graduate, critical thinking, proactive and responsible attitude, efficient communication skills, a mastery of the skills of the latest technologies, a solid background in biochemistry with training in a specific area of research.

Biochemistry has led to many new discoveries and techniques that have revolutionized the concept of life and the applications of biological principles.     The programme is committed to contribute significantly in the generation of new knowledge and in training of our younger generations on these new and exciting developments, for the benefit of Hong Kong, China and the world. Many of our alumni are now taking a leading role in the local and overseas tertiary institutions and in the biotechnology and the biomedical sectors.
