The Divinity School is supported by various denominations in Hong Kong. Its theological orientation thus upholds an ecumenical perspective and a catholic spirit. At present, the supporting churches include: the Church of Christ in China (Hong Kong Council), the Tsung Tsin Mission, the Methodist Church Hong Kong, and Pentecostal Holiness Church.

The Tsung Tsin Mission of Hong Kong is the former Basel Evangelical Missionary Society (or the Basel Mission), established in 1847. It was a conglomeration of churches from Germany and Switzerland; therefore, its theological traditions and church governments stem from both Lutheran and the Reformed faith. In 1847, the Rev. Theodore Hamberg and Rudolph Lechler were sent by the Basel Evangelical Missionary Society to China for mission work.
