Introduction

Yale-China Chinese Language Centre (CLC)

Founded in 1963 under the joint auspices of New Asia College and the Yale-China Association, the Centre became part of the Chinese University in 1974 and has been responsible for the teaching of one language education (Putonghua and Cantonese) of University students as well as other Putonghua and Cantonese learners. Courses are offered in two different series namely (i) for non-native speakers and (ii) for native speakers of Chinese. All the series have different levels to meet the needs and aptitude of students.

- Putonghua/ Cantonese courses for non-native speakers (Teaching Chinese as a foreign/ second language, TCFL)

Full Time Programmes

Applicable to non-native speaking series or Summer School. Certificate, Diploma and Advanced Diploma programmes, together with credits carrying option for current university students from abroad are available. In general, class will be held 5 days a week and 3 sessions per day at CU campus in Shatin. Intake on every January, June and September. Eligible applicants will be sponsored student visa for their study.

Part Time Courses

Applicable to both non-native speaking and native speaking series. Certificate and Diploma programmes are available. Courses are usually held at weekday evening or weekend daytime with a frequency to meet 1-2 times and a total of 2-6 sessions per week. CUHK campus in Shatin and Tsim Sha Tsui are the 2 key locations for the courses. Student intake in every January, April, July and October.

Both full time and part time students can join the Spring Party, cultural tour to mainland China, Pragmatic Internship in China and Outing. Besides, various student support activities will be organized for study abroad students. Cantonese, Mandarin, English, Japanese and Korean speaking workers are available for enquiry.

Chronology & directors

Important Events in CLC’s history

1961		CLC was first established as a private language school by Mrs. Jennie Mak Ling （林麥賢慧女士）to teach Cantonese to expatriates in Hong Kong.
1963		CLC received generous support from New Asia College (新亞書院) and Yale-China Association (雅禮協會) and was officially named as “New Asia--Yale-in-China Chinese Language centre”. The school moved into the former New Asia College campus at Farm Road, Kowloon Tong.
1963		Mandarin (Putonghua) division was founded by Prof. Parker Po-fei Huang (黃伯飛教授)
1974		CLC became part of the Chinese University of Hong Kong on July 1
1978		Construction started on September 28 for Fong Shu Chuen Building under the generous support by Fong Shu Fook Tong Foundation. At the same year, Putonghua program has been extended to CUHK undergraduate students.
1980		Opening ceremony on January 24 for Fong Shu Chuen Building, the major premises of CLC to implement quality Chinese programs.
1990		Opening ceremony of Fong Yun Wah Hall, CLC’s multi-function hall.
1998		Launched the Cantonese program for mainland Chinese students.
2003		40^th anniversary for CLC.
2004		Cantonese program has become compulsory to mainland China undergraduates in CUHK.
2009		According to the decision made by the Administrative and Planning Committee (AAPC) of the University at its 8th meeting (2009), The New Asia--Yale-in-China Chinese Language Center (CLC) became part of the Faculty of Arts under the new name: Yale-China Chinese Language Centre starting from August 2009.

Directors Since

1963		Prof. Parker Po-fei Huang (黃伯飛教授), from Institute of Far Eastern Language of Yale University, US.
1964-1967		Ms. Jennie Mak Ling (林麥賢慧女士), who is also the founding director of the centre in 1961.
1967-1968		Dr. Francis S. Hutchins (何欽思博士), representative of Yale-in-China Association in Hong Kong.
1968-1989		Mr. Liu Ming (劉銘先生), who served for 21 years and during which the reputation of CLC grew together with the Chinese University of Hong Kong.
1989-1991		Mr. Ho Cheuk-sang (何焯生先生) served as the acting director.
1991-2001		Prof. John C. Jamieson (簡慕善教授) from the University of California at Berkeley, US, served as the Director until his retirement.
2001-present		Dr. Weiping Wu (吳偉平博士), a linguist from the centre of Applied Linguistics in Washington DC, US.
