Innovating a Sustainable Future at the Global Business Forum 2019

The Global Business programmes – Global Business Studies (GBS) and International Business Chinese Enterprises (IBCE) – organised the annual Global Business Forum cum Spring Dinner on 2 March 2019. Over 140 GLOBE and IBCE students, alumni and guests from Hong Kong, Denmark and the United States came together to connect and be inspired by industry leaders and budding entrepreneurs.

Themed “Innovating a Sustainable Future”, the Global Business Forum invited Ms. Linda Choy, Vice President, Communications and Public Affairs, Hong Kong Disneyland to share how to make magic sustainable at the Disneyland Resort. Dr. William Yu, Chief Executive Officer of World Green Organisation, highlighted the importance of taking a three-pronged approach to incorporate social, economic and environmental dimensions in business decisions.

At the panel discussion, four social leaders and entrepreneurs explored the topic of “Doing Business with Good Deed”. Panel members included Mr. Chong Chan-yau, Executive Committee member of the Hong Kong Council of Social Services; Ms. Vincci Hui, Marketing Manager, New World Development Company Limited; Mr. Arnold Chan (GBS 2010), Founder and CEO of Teach for Hong Kong; and Mr. Harry Wong (GBS 2017), Deputy Director of Enactus Hong Kong. They took turns to introduce their work and inspire students to bridge the gap between business and society.

Prof. Kalok Chan, Dean of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) Business School and Wei Lun Professor of Finance, introduced the sustainability initiatives of the School. He also encouraged students to stay innovative in their studies and work: “We hope our students are trained not only to help companies grow their business, but also to provide innovative solutions to the society along the business sustainability theme.”

After the forum, students of CUHK Business School, Copenhagen Business School in Denmark, The Kenan-Flagler Business School of The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and The Darla Moore School of Business at the University of South Carolina in the United States and guests joined the spring dinner. During the alumni sharing session, Amy Chan (GBS 2017), Analyst, Asian Equities at UBS AG and Winnie Lee (IBCE 2016), Co-founder of Spread-IT advised students to go the extra mile. In retrospect, they find believing in themselves and leveraging every opportunity as keys to open new doors.

Mr. Raymond Wong, Co-director of GBS Programme shared a lesson on perseverance. He anticipated students to take along with them all the experiences and learnings from the programmes for their future endeavours. Mr. Simon Lee, Co-director of IBCE Programme concluded, “While you are young, gain more exposure and opportunities will follow.”
