Cherry Yau (Year 3) and Kelly Wong (Year 3), together with Colin Liu (Professional Accountancy, Year 3) and Sam Wong (Quantitative Finance, Year 3), took home the championship of the 2015 Xiamen University “KPMG Cup” National Top Ten Tournament Management Case Competition (KPMG Cup) on May 9. Cherry was also awarded the Best Player Award.
Hosted by Xiamen University, with KPMG as the title sponsor, the “KPMG Cup” is an annual management case competition that brings together undergraduates from 10 universities in Hong Kong, mainland China and Taiwan, including CUHK Business School, Fudan University, Peking University, Tsinghua University, Xiamen University, and other top universities of the region.
Designed based on international tournament rules, the KPMG Cup requires student participants to analyze a business case within three hours and generate a formal report to provide solutions and conduct live presentations and defense. The competition aims to test participating teams’ capabilities in business case analysis, teamwork and communication skills.
Sharing their secrets of success, the team said: “To us, the key to victory is synergy. There is rarely a perfect man, but always a perfect team. Although we received no prior training altogether as a team, all of us are case competition enthusiasts and some of us have received trainings from alumni. We shared past experience among ourselves, which eventually made our strategy more holistic and perhaps more impressive to the judges. In terms of our strategy, our motto is: An argument is always more convincing if backed by numbers. When you formulate your argument, it’s always a good idea to quantify the impacts and make sure the logic is sound.”
As part of the award, KPMG will offer the winning team members internship opportunities at its Singapore office.
