Background:

Surgical site infection (SSI) is a leading cause of perioperative morbidity and mortality. Previous ENIGMA trial reported the use of high concentration of oxygen replacing of nitrous oxide reduced the incidence of postoperative surgical site infection. There are evidences demonstrating that nitrous oxide interrupts vitamin B12 metabolism and consequently interrupts the generation of methyl groups for the synthesis of DNA and RNA. These evidences highlight the side-effect of nitrous oxide as an anesthetic agent. On the other hand, limited evidences from in vitro test have presented the inhibitory effect of nitrous oxide in lymphocyte proliferation and chemotaxis. Therefore we assume that nitrous oxide may have immunosuppression effects on patients inhaling N2O as volatile anesthetic during surgeries. This research is to investigate the immunosuppression effects of nitrous oxide.
