Title of Thesis:
Delirium in the intensive care unit after cardiac surgery
Current Employment:
Post-doctoral fellow
School of Chinese Medicine The University of Hong Kong
Outline of the Thesis:
Delirium, defined in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (Fifth Edition), is a syndrome characterized by the “acute onset of cerebral dysfunction with changes in mental status, attention, awareness and cognition”. Cardiac surgery is a high-risk operation associated with delirium. At Hong Kong, there is a lack of knowledge about the magnitude and management of post-cardiac surgery delirium in our patients.
The aims of my thesis will be three folds. Firstly, the current state of knowledge of pharmacological methods for the prevention and treatment of ICU delirium after cardiac surgery is going to be evaluated. Secondly, the magnitude of the ICU delirium problem in post cardiac surgical patients in Hong Kong will be defined and the performance of three commonly used risk prediction models in our patients will be studied. At last, the association of the three subtypes of delirium and fast track failure is going to be examined.
