The Greater Bay Area and the Politics of Scalar Restructuring

Abstract：The Greater Bay Area initiative has aroused widespread interest. So far the attention has been focused on how this Area should be developed. This presentation poses a different question: why central and local governments in China are so keen to establish new geo-economic spaces? Examining the initiative from the perspective of scalar restructuring, this presentation explores the political logic behind the frequent and extensive reconfiguration of state spaces.

Biography: Tak-Wing Ngo is Professor of Political Science at the University of Macau. He specializes in state-market relations, regulatory governance, and the political economy of development in East Asia. He holds a PhD from SOAS (London), and has taught at Leiden University before joining the University of Macao. He is the editor of China Information, and the editor of two book series: Governance in Asia (NIAS Press) and Global Asia (Amsterdam University Press).
