Abstract:The Greater Bay Area initiative has aroused widespread interest. So far the attention has been focused on how this Area should be developed. This presentation poses a different question: why central and local governments in China are so keen to establish new geo-economic spaces? Examining the initiative from the perspective of scalar restructuring, this presentation explores the political logic behind the frequent and extensive reconfiguration of state spaces.
