Where East Meets West: Empirical Research on Drug Users in China and the U.S.

Prof. Yue (Angela) Zhuo, St. John’s University

Abstract:Drug abuse is a global problem faced by both Eastern and Western societies. This talk will introduce and compare two empirical studies on drug users in China and the United States. The first study applies self-control theory to explore deviance and arrests among Chinese drug users. The second study examines the interrelationships between substance use, mental illness, treatment attendance, and aggression among a clinical sample of American patients.  The implications on theory application, interdisciplinary research, and treatment practice will be discussed.
