Where East Meets West: Empirical Research on Drug Users in China and the U.S.

Abstract：Drug abuse is a global problem faced by both Eastern and Western societies. This talk will introduce and compare two empirical studies on drug users in China and the United States. The first study applies self-control theory to explore deviance and arrests among Chinese drug users. The second study examines the interrelationships between substance use, mental illness, treatment attendance, and aggression among a clinical sample of American patients.  The implications on theory application, interdisciplinary research, and treatment practice will be discussed.


Biography: Dr. Yue (Angela) Zhuo is an Associate Professor of Criminology and Sociology at St. John’s University. She is also the affiliated scholar at New York University and visiting research fellow at the University of Macau. Dr. Zhuo received her Ph.D. in sociology from the State University of New York at Albany, M.A. in economics from Nankai University, and LL.B. in law and B.A. in English from Tianjin University. Her research interests include crime and law, substance abuse, juvenile delinquency, and family dynamics. Her work has been published in numerous book chapters and prestigious peer-reviewed journals including Journal of Substance Abuse Treatment, British Journal of Criminology, Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, Research on Aging, etc.
