In 1999, the Office of University General Education of the Chinese University of Hong Kong began publishing a series of works entitled the GE Series in collaboration with the Chinese University Press. The objective of publishing the series is to enhance the public’s awareness of the significance of general education. The editorial committee of the series has invited all teachers on campus responsible for the teaching of general education courses to participate in the series writing plan. Teachers can edit the contents of the general education courses that they teach and relevant teaching materials into books for publication after review and recommendation by the editorial committee. The RCGE has been responsible for the publication work since its establishment in 2005. To date The Pursuit of Philosophy, Nature and Culture: The Story of Environment, Creativity and Co-evolution, Introduction to Physics, Gazing into Death: Multi-disciplinary Perspective and Understanding Japanese Culture through Japanese Language have been published as part of the GE Series and the Order of Nature, Science and Religion, etc. are planned for publication.
Under the 3 + 3 + 4 curriculum in 2012, first year undergraduates will be required to take two general education foundation courses entitled In Dialogue with Nature and In Dialogue with Humanity. The core of these courses consists in reading original Chinese and foreign classics. The editorial committee of the GE Series plans to invite writers with a connection to the general education curriculum of the Chinese University of Hong Kong to write a “classics” series as software to assist in development of the curriculum and create a back-to-the-classics atmosphere.
