Dean of General Education's Message

The design of our programme puts into action the mission of Wu Yee Sun College: creativity with social responsibility. Our aim is to produce students who are capable of making creative use of their scholarship to enhance their personal achievement, and also to benefit our society at large.

College General Education is an essential aspect of CUHK education. We, at Wu Yee Sun College, offer a unique educational programme that complements holistically the academic requirements of the major, minor, and university core curricula. The design of our programme puts into action the mission of Wu Yee Sun College: creativity with social responsibility. Sensitivity to issues of sustainable development in a global context will prepare our students for a life-long commitment to social betterment, regardless of the professional career that they choose to follow.

Every Wu Yee Sun student is required to complete six units of College General Education, ‘Creative Social Responsibility and Sustainable Development’ (a three-unit course for Year 1 students) and ‘College Senior Seminar’ (a three-unit course for Year 4 students).

‘Creative Social Responsibility and Sustainable Development’ consists of four components. First, the course challenges students to reflect on their role for a sustainable future. Students would be exploring topics through the United Nation’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). Second, the course seeks to help students think about what their future is going to be like if humanity continues business-as-usual. Selected issues that critically impact the future of our planet will be discussed. These issues are frequently overlooked by observers, as the world is too often overwhelmed by technological advances. Third, the course discusses the sustainable development of cities and communities to ensure good health and well-being. Fourth, the course draws insights from creativity and design thinking for a sustainable future. The key challenge is how we can put design creativity to good use in our everyday life and in projects that would help create a world of peace and sustained prosperity.

‘College Senior Seminar’ requires students to form small teams to work on a project under the supervision of a faculty member. Students are guided to design and plan innovative social ventures that promise to bring social benefits to the community. Each team has to deliver a report, and peer students would respond with comments on its merits, feasibility, and sustainability.

Apart from the two credit-bearing courses, Wu Yee Sun College offers non-credit bearing College assemblies, high-table dinners, and regular guest lectures. Our students are therefore engaged, throughout their four years, in a continuous educational process that is consistent with our mission. We strive to foster a culture in which our students can learn in a free, inspiring, and rewarding environment.
