Three GPS students have recently received the “President Prize for Best Poster Presentation” for their augmented reality (AR) research project at the Annual Scientific Meeting held by the Hong Kong College of Otorhinolaryngologists. The awardees are LAM Christopher Ian (Year 4), LAM Ching Long (Brian, Year 5), and LEUNG Hei Long (Marcus, Year 5).

“Our project, in collaboration with the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Hong Kong, aims to investigate the application of AR in endoscopic sinus surgery. It began nearly 3 years ago with numerous challenges and hurdles which we had to overcome. Last week, we were able to present the preliminary results of our phantom and cadaver trials at the Annual Scientific Meeting. We were fortunate enough to win the President Prize for best poster presentation. Special credit goes to our mentor Dr Jason CHAN from CU Medicine, as well as Professor Ka Wai KWOK and his team over at the University of Hong Kong. They are the main driving force behind this project. We hope that there will be more fruitful experiences to come in our continuous journey, which ultimately benefit patients,” the awarded trio says.

Their GPS Project Mentor Dr Jason CHAN, Associate Professor of Department of Otorhinolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery, remarks, “Brian, Chris and Marcus as the only medical students, youngest of the crowd, presented their work with great poise and were awarded the President’s Prize for the best poster while other presenters were surgical specialists and even consultants. I am very proud of their outstanding achievements.”
