Cultural Accomplishment Awardee 2020

Not only is Dr. LIYEUNG Lucci Lugee a well-known orthopaedic surgeon at the Prince of Wales Hospital, she is also an accomplished cartoonist and illustrator. She tends to view the world as one large blank canvas on which she would scribble witty depictions of her daily life or happenings in the hospital. She aptly describes herself as a “cultural coalescence in the dexterity of art.

One of her unforgettable artworks is a lengthy mural adorning the wall linking the second floor of PWH to the other buildings.

Her proudest creation, undoubtedly, is Dumo. Dumo is a cartoon cheetah inspired by a real-life cheetah orphan, Duma, that she fell in love with while volunteering at a cheetah sanctuary in Namibia. Perhaps Duma reminded her of a little stuffed cheetah she was given at the age of four. Dumo is now the mascot of the Cheetah Conservation Fund and the mascot and logo of a local baseball team in which Dr. LIYEUNG is a player.

Dr. LIYEUNG created the “Dr. Dumo et al” colouring book to educate school children to fight against COVID-19.

Despite a busy work schedule, she always makes time for charity work. She raised HK$60,000 for local animal charities by selling Dumo products at a Chinese new year market heralding the Year of the Pig. The National Geographic Society and the HK Conservancy Association benefited from sales of reusable masks and mask folders bearing the Dumo trademark during this Covid-19 pandemic.
 

She likes utilising her artistic talents to disseminate health education, particularly aimed at children. When Covid-19 first made an appearance, it took her just three nights to come up with a bilingual story book for kids, featuring Dumo and his friends, with brilliantly illustrated tips on how to properly wash hands and wear a mask and keep the home environment clean. The book, Dr Dumo et al, became an instant hit. It was widely distributed to children in schools and hospitals for free, translated into at least 12 languages and has appeared on several websites.

Two medically-related books targeting children are due out soon.

Dr. LIYEUNG was born in San Francisco, raised in Hong Kong and educated in London. Who would have thought that a six-year-old child, who drew pictures for a TV ad of a major dairy company, and later obtained a Biomedical Engineering Degree, then went on to become an orthopaedic surgeon, could combine medicine and art so effortlessly and magically…?

Dr. LIYEUNG truly deserves to take home the Distinguished Medical Alumni Award 2020 for Cultural Accomplishment.
