CUHK Receives Oracle Bone Calligraphies from Dr Xie Chunling

The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) is honoured to receive twelve pieces of oracle bone calligraphies from Dr Xie Chunling, an acclaimed expert in oracle bone inscriptions.  In appreciation of her generosity, a donation ceremony was held at the Sir Run Run Shaw Hall of CUHK on Thursday, 24 May 2018.  Officiated at the ceremony were Dr Xie Chunling, Mr Chen Keng, Professor Fok Tai-fai, Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Vice-President of CUHK, and Dr Scotty Luk, Director of University Health Service of CUHK. 

In his welcoming address, Professor Fok Tai-fai expressed his heartfelt gratitude to Dr Xie Chunling for her generosity in donating her calligraphies to CUHK.  ‘Dr Xie is a renowned expert in oracle bone inscriptions. These oracle bone calligraphies featuring Chinese characters in education, health and medical treatment will be permanently displayed at the University Health Centre of CUHK. The display of Dr Xie’s oracle bone calligraphies with Mr Chen Keng’s oil paintings at the Centre embodies our mission “to combine tradition with modernity, and to bring together China and the West”,’ he said.

In his speech, Dr Scotty Luk said that time has changed and now the society emphasized the importance of therapeutic environment.  He believed that with the display of the oracle bone calligraphies, the environment of the University Health Centre could be improved as well as the wellness of all patients and even staff members. 

Dr Xie Chunling also wished all visitors good health and eventually find their inner peace and happiness at the ceremony.  As a Senior Lecturer at the Yale-China Chinese Language Centre, Dr Xie has taught in CUHK for more than ten years.  Her research interests include the syntax of oracle bone inscriptions, development and evolution of Chinese scripts, etc.  She has published many academic articles and two monographs.  Dr Xie is also an expert in calligraphy of Chinese ancient writings. Her calligraphies have been exhibited in Hong Kong, United States of America, Japan, etc.
