MSc in Mathematics

The master’s degree in mathematics encompasses the basic graduate curriculum in mathematics, and also offers the opportunity of some more specialized training in an area of interest. A typical master’s programme will involve the following fields: algebra, analysis, geometry, foundations, numerical analysis, computer science, and various other fields of applied mathematics.

There are two streams in the Programme:

·Mathematics Stream
·Big Data Analytics and Computations Stream

Students can declare stream in their final term of study, it usually will be done in February. Students will be informed by email to CWEM account.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this degree, graduates should have acquired good mathematical knowledge and skill beyond undergraduate level.

I. Mathematics Stream

A. Knowledge

Graduates should have acquired:

  1. advanced concepts in mathematics of higher level;
  2. mathematical theory and applications in rigorous fashion; and
  3. Further knowledge in recently developed topics of mathematics.

II. Big Data Analytics and Computations Stream

A. Knowledge

Graduates will have advanced knowledge in computational methods and data analytics;

B. Skills

Graduates can apply efficient methods to analyze the data in many different areas, for example, business, industry and scientific research.

Coursework Requirement

I. Mathematics Stream

Students are required to complete 24 units in Mathematics coded MMAT5xxx, in which at most 3 units can be chosen from MATH3XXX-4XXX or MATH5XXX-6XXX; or

II. Big Data Analytics and Computations Stream

Students who select to specialize in Big Data Analytics and Computation Stream* are required to complete 24 units in MMAT5XXX, in which at least 18 units are chosen from MMAT5210, 5230, 5240, 5250, and 53XX. At most 3 units can be chosen from MATH3XXX-4XXX or MATH5XXX-6XXX.

At least one full academic year of study for a full-time student and at least two full academic years of study for a part-time student are required. Unless with written approval from the Graduate Panel, a full-time student should take no more than 5 courses in each term; a part-time student should take no more than 2 courses in each term.

Other Requirements

  1. Students must fulfill the Term Assessment Requirement of the Graduate School. For details, please refer to Section 13.0 “Unsatisfactory Performance and Discontinuation of Studies” of the General Regulations Governing Postgraduate Studies which can be accessed from the Graduate School Homepage: http://www.gs.cuhk.edu.hk.
  2. A student must achieve a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of at least 2.0 in order to fulfill the graduation requirement, unless special approval is granted by the Graduate Council.

Stream Declaration

  1. Stream declaration will be done in the last term of study. This stream will be officially recorded on academic transcripts if stream declaration is approved and all the requirements as specified are fulfilled.
  2. Students who do not declare specialization in Big Data Analytics and Computations Stream or do not meet the requirements of this stream are automatically in Mathematics Stream. In this case, the Mathematics Stream will not be recorded on academic transcripts.

Financial aids and scholarships

  1. Department of Mathematics offers a number of scholarships to outstanding students on the basis of the academic performance in the preceding academic year. Scholarship recipient must be a full-time or a part-time student studying MSc degree in mathematics. The amount of the scholarships range from HK$30,000 to HK$50,000.
  2. Starting from the academic year (2020-2021), a new scheme “Student helpers scheme” is providing a monthly financial aid of HK$7000 to eligible local full-time MSc students. Those MSc helpers will do the work of marking and help us deal with some departmental activities.
