Best Practices for Accessing Campus Network at Student Hostels

  1. Use a wired ResNet connection whenever possible
    • Wired and wifi connections are provided in student hostels. Many hostel residents choose to use wifi connection instead of ResNet connection to surf the web because of the mobility feature of wifi. In fact, wifi is provided as an alternative in hostels and it is always recommended to use a ResNet connection through the LAN port provided in hostel for a speedier and more stable connection.
  2. Use SSID=CUHKa if your device can detect the signal
    • Compared to SSID=CUHK, SSID=CUHKa is less congested, more stable and has fewer sources of interference. If your device supports 802.11a/n (5 GHz), it will be able to detect SSID=CUHKa.
  3. Do not install your wifi access point (AP)
    • This will cause interference to the University central wifi service and bring disturbance to other users. With more users install their APs, it is more difficult to enjoy smooth service from the University wifi service.
    • This practice is also against ITSC use policy that setting up routing or other special network functions in hostel network is prohibited.
    • The University c entral Wifi service only broadcasts the following SSIDs:
      SSID=CUHKa, CUHK, CUguest, eduroam, CSL , Y5ZONE, Universities WiFi
      If you have detected other unknown SSIDs, please report it to ITSC by specifying your hostel, room number and capturing a screen with detected signals like below:
  4. Scan your PC with anti-virus software regularly
    • When a PC is infected or hacked, it may generate unstable and huge network traffic. Since the network equipment has to handle the traffic, they would become slow to handle the normal traffic. Therefore, in order to protect other users of the campus network, once ITSC detected unstable or huge network traffic from a port, it will be disabled without any notification.
  5. Avoid areas where wifi is over-utilized.
  6. Mind possible interference and obstacles such as nearby microwave ovens, Bluetooth devices and etc.
