Millions of dollars of resources have been invested into the development and maintenance of various large-scale man-made linear features around the world, as one of important characters of civilization. Many of them are landmarks in the world. However, the deformation has become a serious problem of those man-made features, for the loss not only of financial investment but also lives at many places, as where subsidence was caused by underground construction of subways or reservoirs. Traditional surveying methods are not enough to help because of the costs and infeasibilities at many situations.

Satellite remote sensing methods have been sought in recent years for monitoring deformation problems of those large-scale man-made linear features. Active remote sensing methods, InSAR and Lidar in particular, and satellite positioning systems have attracted people’s attention. However, many theoretical and technical issues for the deformation monitoring need to be solved before a standard can be accepted for engineering applications.

This workshop will serve as an open forum to exchange ideas with latest development in this area. We are now inviting research papers related to the deformation of the following large-scale man-made linear features:

- High-speed highways/railways
- Subways and urban beltway systems
- Dams and dykes of reservoirs, great lakes and rivers
- Oil/gas pipelines
- Others
