Electronic Engineering Department, The Chinese University of Hong Kong - Programme Overview

Emphases

Continuous professional development is essential to electronic engineers to open new doors and to excel at work. This is what we want to offer in our Master's Degree programme. Success means not only to drive your career forward, but as proven by our Founding Chairman, Professor Charles Kao, to win world accolade as a Nobel Laureate.

Today's electronic engineers face many new challenges. Many new applications require multi-disciplinary skill. More than just conventional electronics, one needs to understand optics, solar technology and nano devices etc. There is a paradigm shift in design considerations. Cost effectiveness and high performance are no longer the only concerns. Engineers are asked to grasp issues like green regulations and carbon emission factor, etc. Added to all this, there is a trend of moving from electrons to photons in order to maintain the accelerating speed in computing and communication. This is why we are offering a programme which is wide in coverage and allows students to choose freely according to their aspirations and interests.

Students will engage with our research laboratories, working with research postgraduate students on a specific engineering project under supervision of a faculty member.

Advanced Technology Courses

The programme includes advanced subjects in areas of technology and management in modern engineering, artificial intelligence, big data analytics, future IOT applications, renewable energy, smart materials, solid-state devices, photonics, spoken language and video technology and VLSI:

ELEG5759 Innovation, Technology and Management in Modern Engineering
This course introduces the key concepts and issues of innovation, technology and management in the context of modern engineering practices. The new wave of socio-technological development is viewed as an integration and convergence of innovations and technology in communication, work, entertainment and others in our daily life. The objective of the course is to provide students a general overview and roadmap of creating cutting edge innovation and evolving digital economy. It helps students to establish a deep understanding about how engineering practice works, and how it affects and reshapes our communities and society, and about how to become best engineering performers. The best practices of intellectual property (IP) rights, protection, enforcement, and IP management from a technology perspective will also be introduced. Through case studies, students will appreciate the decision process on the type of technology to be developed, the development process of the technology, and how to turn new technology into real products. The aspects of funding, market study and commercialization will be covered.
ELEG5760 Machine Learning for Signal Processing Applications
This course aims to provide students with a general understanding of various computational techniques that enable machines to understand different types of data and signals, including text, speech, image and video. The course content covers the methods that are used to analyze, classify and detect the underlying information, properties and modalities inherent in complex signals. Students will learn the theories, models, algorithms and operation of machine learning tools, which have been successfully developed and deployed for speech/audio and image/video processing applications. Specifically, the basics and recent progress of deep learning techniques will be introduced.
ELEG5753 Flexible Electronics and Solar Cell Technology
Review of semiconductor fundamentals; Introduction to organic semiconductors; Applications of organic thin films as active components in optoelectronic devices including; Fabrication methods for flexible electronics; Fundamentals of photo-electric conversion; Basic principles of photovoltaic devices; Introduction to four-generation solar technologies; Light harvesting and management techniques; Applications.
ELEG5754 Solid-state Sensors and Lighting Systems
Comparison between different lighting sources, lighting standards, basics of all-solid-state lamps, solid-state lighting systems, sensor fundamentals, signal conditioning, functional aspects of different sensors, sensor device examples, technology trend and challenges of solid-state lighting and sensor devices.
ELEG5755 Optical Communication and Interconnects
Overview of optical fibre communications. Types and properties of fibres. Optical transmitters, receivers, and repeaters. Passive optical component. Optical modulation and multiplexing techniques. Fibre communication systems. Optical networks. Introduction to optical interconnects. Silicon photonics. Active optical cables. Recent trends in optical interconnects.
ELEG5757 Wearable Bioelectronics
Introduction to health informatics, fundamentals in electro-physiologies, reviews on bio-electronics including ion channels, bio-sensor principles, e-textile sensing, flexible-stretchable-printable bioelectronics, organic transistors, wearable design by "MINDS" (Miniaturization, Intelligence, Networking, Digitization, and Standardization), wearable medical devices and systems, wearable robotics, implantable therapeutic systems, sensor informatics, applications, and topics of current interests.
ELEG5758 VLSI Digital Signal processing
This course will offer an overview of basic digital circuit design. It will then move on to advanced design techniques and at the same time covers a hardware design language, Verilog. The rest of the course will describe formal methods to optimize digital signal processing implementation. Methods include pipelining, parallel processing, retiming, unfolding and folding. This course will have a practical exercise to offer students opportunity to go through a digital signal processing implementation from algorithm specification to hardware.
ELEG5726 Power Management Technology
This course is designed for students to gain an understanding of technological development of power-management IC design. Through this course, students will learn the essentials of voltage-regulator design. Recent advances in selected topics will also be discussed.

Venue & Facilities

The classes will be held in weekday evenings in the University campus in Shatin. Through advanced booking, students can use various facilities and service in the Department of Electronic Engineering, and the University, e.g. computer laboratory and the University Library services.

The Department

The history of our department precedes the Faculty of Engineering. Its rich history has enabled the department to excel in all fronts. Over the past 49 years, we have nourished more than 4,000 graduates. Many of them are now in influential positions in their professions. We have been very successful in securing research funding to boost our research personnel to over 160 postgraduate students and 80 research staff.

Our staff maintains a good record of awards and decorations. First and foremost is the Nobel Prize awarded to our Founding Chairman the late Professor Charles Kao in 2009. Professor Meng Max Qing Hu has been elected Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering (CAE) for his notable achievements in Engineering. Professor Tsang Hon Ki received the Research Excellence Award in 2007. Professor Zhang Yuanting won the Hong Kong ICT Gold Award in 2008 and 2014 IEEE-SA Emerging Technology Award in 2014. Professor Wu Ke Li invented the first ever smallest Bluetooth module in 2005. Professor XU Jianbin received the Joint Research Fund for Overseas Chinese, Hong Kong and Macau Scholars funded by NSFC in 2009 and has been awarded a prestigious award of Cheung Kong Visiting Chair Professorship by the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China. Professor XU Jianbin and Professor Tsang Hon Ki as well as their research teams have been awarded the 2nd prize of the Natural Science Awards 2014 by the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China. We have eight IEEE Fellows among us and our staff received Best Paper Awards in numerous occasions.
