Research Statement

My research centers on the translation activities of Christian missionaries in 19th century China.

 

My current project focuses on S. Wells Williams’s political translation activities during the period from 1857 to 1876. It aims to foreground the multiple roles played by Williams as a missionary-diplomatic translator in the early Sino-US relations. Through Williams’s case, the project also tries to present the interactive relations between translation and politics in the mid-19th century.
