The most systematic way to secure a foundation in Chinese as a foreign/ second language.

 

These are the programmes where the Centre first gained its reputation since its foundation in the early 60's. Students range from absolute beginners to trained sinologists who wish to learn a Chinese dialect or to polish their spoken Chinese.

 

Intake: January, June and September

 

Course load: 3 sessions a day, 5 days a week, approximate 165 sessions per trimester. lesson during daytime.

 

Class location: CUHK Shatin campus.

Daytime intensive mode: 6 months. Minimum 330 hours. (30 credits)

Expected learning outcome: 
Speaking & Listening (PO1-S&L): 

  • Ability to understand and reply to utterances containing selected vocabulary items and grammar points at the sentence level in daily conversations; 

  • Ability to apply selected vocabulary items and grammatical patterns at the sentence level in daily conversations with appropriate usage; 

  • Ability to communicate fluently with selected vocabulary items and grammatical patterns at the sentence level in daily settings; 

  • Ability to comprehend and listen to daily conversations and give appropriate responses at the sentence level; 

  • Ability to present ideas at the sentence level in daily communication settings

 

Reading(R1): Ability to read individual words and short phrases in real life contexts and understand the formation of Chinese characters (e.g. stroke order, etc)

Day time intensive mode: 12 months. Minimum 495 hours. (45 credits)

Expected learning outcome:

Speaking & Listening (PO2-S&L):

  • Ability to understand and reply to short connected utterances containing selected vocabulary items and grammatical structures in most real life conversations

  • Ability to apply selected vocabulary items and grammatical structures in short connected utterances in most real life conversations with appropriate usage; 

  • Ability to communicate fluently with selected vocabulary items and grammatical structures in short connected utterances in most real life settings;

  • Ability to comprehend and listen to discourses & conversations and give appropriate responses in short connected utterances; 

  • Ability to present ideas in short connected utterances in most real life communication settings.

Reading(R1-2): Ability to recognize and read Chinese characters and readings at the sentence level in real life contexts.
 

Writing(W1): Ability to copy and reproduce from memory a modest number of isolated words or phrases in context.

Advanced Diploma Programme in Chinese as a Foreign/ Second Language (Cantonese)

Day time intensive mode: 20 months. Minimum 759 hours. (69 credits)

 

Expected learning outcome:

Speaking & Listening(PO3-S&L): 

  • Ability to understand and reply to professional discourses containing selected vocabulary items and grammatical structures in real life settings; 

  • Ability to apply selected vocabulary items and grammatical structures at the discourse level in real life professional conversations with appropriate usage; 

  • Ability to communicate fluently in professional discourses containing selected vocabulary items and grammatical structures in real life settings; 

  • Ability to comprehend and listen to professional discourses & conversations and give appropriate responses at the discourse level; 

  • Ability to present ideas at the discourse level in real life professional settings.

 

Reading (R1-3): 

  • Ability to recognize and read Chinese characters and readings at the sentence level in real life contexts; 

  • Ability to comprehend and read Chinese readings at paragraph level in real life contexts.

 

Writing (W1-2):

  • Ability to copy and reproduce from memory a modest number of isolated words or phrases in context. W2:

  • Ability to write short messages, postcards and simple notes and to express themselves within the context in which the language was learned.

Foundation Certificate Programme in Integrated Chinese Communication for Workplace
職業中文綜合溝通基礎證書課程

 

Day time intensive mode: 3- 6 months. Minimum 80 hours.
 

Expected learning outcome:

For beginner entrants:

  • Ability to understand and reply to utterances containing selected vocabulary items and grammar points at the sentence level in daily conversations. 

  • Ability to read individual words in real life contexts and gain a basic understanding about the formation of Chinese characters.

 

For elementary level entrants:

  • Ability to apply selected vocabulary items and grammatical patterns at the sentence level in daily conversations with appropriate usage. 

  • Ability to read individual words and short phrases in real life contexts.

For intermediate level entrants: 

  • Ability to understand and reply to short connected utterances containing selected vocabulary items and grammatical structures in most real life conversations.

  • Ability to recognize and read Chinese characters and readings at the sentence level in real life contexts. 

For advanced level entrants: 

  • Ability to apply selected vocabulary items and grammatical structures in short connected utterances in most real life conversations with appropriate usage. 

  • Ability to comprehend and read Chinese readings at paragraph level in real life contexts.

Award Requirements:

  • Completion of at least one Cantonese module and at least one Chinese reading module from the approved course list.

  • Minimum required  contact hours: 80 .

  • Minimum attendance rate: 70% in each module.

  • Achieve satisfactory assessment in each module.

中文閱讀基礎證書課程

 

Day time intensive mode: 12 months. Minimum 80 hours.

 

Expected learning outcome:

For beginner entrants: 

  • Ability to read individual words and short phrases in real life contexts and has a basic understanding about the formation of Chinese characters. 

 

For elementary level entrants: 

  • Ability to recognize and read Chinese characters and readings at the sentence level in real life contexts; 

  • Ability to copy and reproduce from memory a modest number of isolated words or phrases in context.

For intermediate level entrants: 

  • Ability to comprehend and read Chinese readings at paragraph level in real life contexts.

 

For advanced level entrants: 

  • Ability to read and understand Chinese characters with authentic materials and contexts in professional settings; 

  • Ability to write short messages, postcards and simple notes and to express themselves within the context in which the language was learned.

Award Requirements:

  • Completion of three Chinese reading module from the approved course list.

  • Minimum required  contact hours: 80 .

  • Minimum attendance rate: 70% in each module.

  • Achieve satisfactory assessment in each module.
