Stories of Fighting COVID-19 from Our Former Chia Fellows
2020 June 15
Yale-China alumni were on the Coronavirus frontlines this spring—when Xiangya Hospital, Second Hospital and Third Hospital assigned 461 medical professionals to Wuhan to battle the coronavirus outbreak at its epicenter. Former Yale-China Chia Fellows XIONG Yang (2018), LI Li (2011), and LIU Jia (2010) share their personal experiences:
XIONG Yang (Chia Fellow 2018) and a member of the 3rd Medical Rescue Team of Xiangya Hospital, Central South University, dispatched to Wuhan International Medical Center
“Participating in caring for patients with COVID-19 is my mission and responsibility as a nurse. When I walked into the isolation ward for the first time, I felt nervous and scared. But when I saw the eyes of the patients who were eager to live, saw the patients recovering day by day under our carefully integrated care, and heard the words of gratitude from the patients, I knew that I should do more for them. Despite the risks and hard work of working in the isolated critical care ward, it also made me re-recognize the preciousness of life, moved by the mutual help from all over the country, and the power of solidarity and cooperation. Nurses have played an important role in this battle against COVID-19, from caring for patients' daily lives, to observing and rescuing critically ill patients, from paying attention to patients’ subtle emotional fluctuations, to operating and using various instruments and equipment. This work can’t succeed without the nurse's meticulous and serious work attitude and skilled professional work level. I hope that the whole society can pay more attention to the nurses’ feelings and experiences, and give nurses more support and care. Effectively protecting the physical and mental health of nurses is also an important prerequisite for ensuring the safety of patients and effectively curbing this epidemic.”
LI Li 李丽 (Chia Fellow 2011)
(Chia Fellow 2010)
