Dear Students, I hope you are having a good semester so far. It has been a difficult year for everyone due to the pandemic, but I hope that you all got used to the online learning and the ‘new normal’ life. I joined CUHK in August 2019, but I am new to LWS college and hope to meet you in the near future. Since I moved to Hong Kong from Vancouver Canada, I have not had much chance to explore Hong Kong. Similar as many of you, I enjoy social activities with friends and nice cuisine, but due to the pandemic, these have not been possible. Life is always unpredictable. We just need to adapt ourselves to the new environment. Meanwhile, I am a big fan of outdoor activities. I used to do a lot of hiking, biking, snow shoeing and skiing. Luckily, Hong Kong also has many options for outdoor activities. Hiking is a good exercise during the pandemic as it gives you enough social distancing. If you also like outdoor activities, please take some time to relax and get some fresh air during this busy semester.
It has been very inconvenient during the pandemic period. For instance, we might not be able to see friends and families due to the travel restriction. On the other hand, we also learned new things including the online teaching and learning. Although online teaching is difficult for some practical courses and decreases the interaction between teachers and students, it may provide some other benefits. For example, some students told me that the online teaching has saved them more time as they did not need to travel to campus, which actually helped them learn better and achieve good grades. Things always have a bright side if we have a positive attitude.
My research focuses on health promotion in the elderly. It has been delayed due to the difficulty of recruiting older participants during the pandemic. Our research team had to make alternative plans, while maintaining regular online communications. Recently, one of my collaborators from Hong Kong Sheng Kung Hui (senior service unit) sent me a music video that was performed by a group of older adults. I was quite touched; these older fellows have such positive attitudes during this difficult time and they try to encourage each other. I would like to share this video (link attached below). I hope the video can bring us some inspiration.

The Lunar New Year is coming soon. I hope 2021 would be a lucky and happy year for all of us. Please do take a break and enjoy the holiday.
