This course examines different theories in conceptualising families such as structural-functionalism, systems theory and the post-modernist's view. The recent changes in family life in Hong Kong and in Chinese society connected to the changing socio-eco-cultural context will be investigated. Particular attention will be given to the developmental needs and problems of families as well as the stress, coping and resilience of families in different stages. Culture and gender issues, the roles of social services and educational system, current problems and challenges confronting family development in Hong Kong will also be scrutinised.
