This course aims to help students acquire a comparative perspective on contemporary social security systems. It will examine the cross-national variations in the characteristics, traditions, major programmes and outcomes of different social security systems. Emphasis will also be placed on the current issues and debates such as the impact of globalization and population ageing, affordability and equity, reform strategies in general as well as specific programmes – social assistance, health care and pensions.
