This course is designed to familiarize participants with the major paradigms and methodologies in qualitative social work research. It aims to enable students to attain a deeper understanding of the philosophical foundations, principles and procedures of different qualitative approaches in social work inquiry. The course will cover topics such as the origins and developments of qualitative social work research, ethnography, grounded theory, phenomenology and interpretive phenomenological analysis, narrative analysis, discourse analysis, and participatory action research. The course will place a strong emphasis on applying these approaches to research in social work and human services.
