Biography

Dr. Tony Mak is a Specialist in General Surgery with more than 20 years of clinical experience. He was trained in the United Kingdom and pursued a career in General, Colorectal and Minimal Invasive Surgery before starting his career in Hong Kong in 2011. He is a skilled open and minimally invasive surgeon as well as a registered colorectal cancer screening endoscopist.

He was awarded a doctorate degree (M.D.) in 2008 for his work in Hereditary Non-polyposis Colorectal Cancer by the University of Manchester, United Kingdom.

He is an educator for both undergraduate students of CUHK and is a post-graduate colorectal surgical trainer for the College of Surgeons Hong Kong.

Administratively, he is the deputy director for the CUHK Jockey Club Minimally Invasive Surgical Skills Centre and is currently Council Member for both the Hong Kong Society for Coloproctology and Hong Kong Society of Robotic Surgery.


Research Interests

His research interests include the effects of adipose mesenchymal stem cells on colonic healing (awarded the best scientific paper at the Conjoint Scientific Congress 2014, Hong Kong and the British Journal of Surgery Prize 2014 as the winner of the Six Best Free Papers in the European Society of Coloproctology 9th scientific and annual meeting, Barcelona), the use of Acu-TENS for the treatment of faecal incontinence (PI, HMRF 13140421), enhanced Colo-geriatric programme (PI, HMRF 1210701) and prehabilitation programme with sarcopenic colorectal cancer patients.
