Matt Cheung practised in leading law firms in London and Auckland, New Zealand, before returning to Hong Kong in 2008. In his 7 years of practice, he was primarily a banking and finance litigator specialising in civil fraud. He also practised in other areas, including administrative law, intellectual property, information technology and international trade.
Matt also has considerable teaching experience. He was a part-time tutor of Legal Theory and Jurisprudence at the University of Auckland. He also taught for 3 years at the College of Law (now the University of Law) in Moorgate, London. The subjects he taught there include Civil and Criminal Litigation, Business, Commercial Dispute Resolution, Banking and Debt Finance, and Legal Writing and Drafting. At the College of Law he was the Associate Director of Design for Linklaters LLP’s London office. In this role he designed the Civil Litigation Legal Practice Course and its examinations for the firm’s London office and taught many of its trainees.
At CUHK, Matt teaches eight disciplines across the LLB, JD, LLM and the PCLL. His subjects range from the most theoretical (such as LLB Jurisprudence) to the practice-based (for instance Civil Procedure on the LLB and JD / LLM and Trial Advocacy on the PCLL).
At CUHK Law Matt has served as Assistant Director of the PCLL Programme and then as Assistant Dean of Graduate Studies / Programme Director of the Juris Doctor programme. He currently heads Alumni Affairs.
