MPhil Stream

1. Students are required to complete a minimum of 14 units for graduation, including a minimum of 8 units of required lecture courses and 6 units of elective lecture courses. 
2. A thesis research course must be taken in each term until thesis submission.
3. Students are required to submit a research thesis and pass an oral examination for graduation.

PhD Stream 

1. Students are required to complete a minimum of 14 units for graduation, including a minimum of 8 units of required lecture courses and 6 units of elective lecture courses.
2. A thesis research course must be taken in each term until thesis submission.
3. Students are required to submit a thesis proposal and make an oral presentation and defence of the thesis proposal.
4. Students are required to pass two comprehensive examinations within a period specified.

In addition to the general requirements of the Graduate School, applicants should:

• MPhil Stream - submit a study plan for review.
• PhD Stream - submit a study plan and proof of their research capability in the form of strong recommendations from their academic referees or past publications.

For non-HKPFS PhD applicants: Applications are accepted throughout the year.

1. To submit an initial application to RGC: By 12 noon, 1 December 2020 (Hong Kong time); and
2. To submit full application to CUHK: By 5 pm, 1 December 2020 (Hong Kong time).

Students will be assigned to both the Division of Gender Studies and a subject department. Students need to complete 9 units from the Gender Studies Programme, fulfill the requirements of the subject department and submit a written thesis in order to graduate. The requirements of subject disciplines maybe adjusted at the discretion of subject departments. 

Fields of Specialization 

Students will conduct independent research under any department (including but not limited to Anthropology, Cultural Studies, Educational Administration and Policy, History, Japanese Studies, Journalism, Literature, Nursing, Psychology, Sociology or Social Work, and other allied fields) with a focus on gender.

2. have good background in their intended field of concentration.

Applicants may come from a variety of backgrounds. On their application forms, applicants must indicate the subject discipline for which they wish to be considered. Meanwhile, applicants must present a research proposal providing a brief description of the intended research topic, objectives, and methods. The research proposal should use the academic method and approach characteristic of the applicants’ intended subject discipline to explore a topic involving issues of gender. Applications will be jointly considered by the Gender Studies Programme and the subject department.

The programme emphasizes both theoretical knowledge and research skills and allows students to bring together different disciplinary and methodological approaches for the advancement of gender studies. 

Earning a total of at least 22.5 units, passing the written qualifying examinations, submitting a thesis and passing an oral examination are required for graduation.
