譽書房

The Books of Honor scheme is to honor the achievement of our academic staff.
The honorees are faculty members who receive Exemplary Teaching Award,
Research Excellence Award and Research Mentorship Award, as well as
retired or retiring colleagues whose contributions have left a deep
impression in the CUHK legacy.

Each honoree is invited to choose a book for Library collections and author
an enlightening message on how the chosen book has inspired his/her
academic career. These selections are book-plated in their honor, and
stand as a reminder now and into the future of the remarkable
accomplishment of our faculty members.

This book is a classic in modern social thought as well as a great exemplar of cross-cultural development of ideas.  Largely by way of this work, the American social sciences were much enriched by the Continental intellectual tradition.  Integrative efforts of this kind are of great needs today, and it is with similar spirit that I pursued my intellectual project on Sociology and the Chinese Enlightenment.

This is the first book on the topic and is a great landmark in the history of psychology. It opened my eyes to the scientific study of mental processes and had a profound impact on my academic and research pursuits.

“Skin trade” has the negative connotation that a job is dirty if it involves contact with marginalized people in society. This book reminded me that sociology IS a skin trade, in that its goal should be to study and help the needy and minorities. I am very fortunate to have studied drug addicts for two decades and made contributions to the improvement of drug rehabilitation services in Hong Kong.

One of my favorite books is The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho. The book reminds us to pursue our “personal legends” with courage, determination, and a childlike-innocence. In my pursuit of my “personal legend” to become a researcher and a Professor, I have received the help of many. I wholeheartedly believe, as it is written in the book, “when you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you achieve it.” After reading the book, I hope to play a part in helping my students achieve their dreams.

To become an expert in any area, one needs to be narrowly focused on whatever topic we choose to study. After a while, all experts tend to get lost in the details and miss the big picture! In “Human: The Science Behind What Makes Us Unique”, Gazzaniga helps us piece together all the details in psychological science and see the forest again!

Paradigm is the most powerful concept of this small but influential book. It refers to the ways scientists look at the world, ask questions about the world and how they find the answers. Scientific knowledge is advanced as a given paradigm is challenged by anomalies and eventually replaced by a contending paradigm. The analysis has important implications for our understanding of knowledge.
