CUHK NEWSLETTER Fleeting Thoughts on Receipt of the Long Service Award Dr. Benjamin Y. M. Chan, Dept. of Educational Administration & Policy What immediately comes to mind is the disbelief an d amazemen t tha t suc h a lon g period of time could have gone by, and so fast. The initial encounter with students on a fine autumn day in 1968 is still vivid; I can see their face s an d hea r the m talk . Th e tota l enrolment o f the Schoo l o f Educatio n durin g the first few years of my service was never more than 50 . In those early years the 'University' existed only in one's mind, because the three constituent colleges wer e scattere d aroun d variou s part s of the city. The School of Education was then located on Nathan Road in Mongkok, above a local bank. The students were quite pleased with the location since i t was easil y accessible . Staf f also foun d it convenient becaus e s o man y eatin g place s were literally a t our doorsteps . Through teaching and research at the Faculty of Education, you witness your students grow academically an d professionally. This, to me, is a most satisfying experience.
