More than a dozen of CUHK faculty members recently received awards from prestigious institutions, gaining them tremendous acclaim and recognition locally and internationally.
Eleven Influential Researchers Receive Recognition
Eleven professors named in the list of ‘Highly Cited Researchers 2020’ released by Clarivate Analytics.
CUHK professors make great contributions to scholarship on a global scale and demonstrate significant influence in their chosen fields through the publication of multiple highly-cited papers.
As such, 11 professors recently earned the honour of being named in the list of ‘Highly Cited Researchers 2020’ released by Clarivate Analytics. The award is given to researchers who demonstrate significant and broad influence reflected in their publication of multiple papers that rank in the top 1% by citations in their respective fields of study and year of publication.
They are Professor Tony Mok, Professor Joseph Sung, Professor Vincent Wong, Professor Henry Chan, Professor Xinhui Lu, Professor Siew Chien Ng, Professor Po Keung Wong, Professor Jianbin Xu, Professor Jimmy Yu, Professor Ching Ping Wong, and Professor Sing Lee.

CUHK is a research-driven university and demonstrates great strengths in a number of fields. Its professors break scientific frontiers and make significant contributions to advance understanding in various subjects. A number of professors were recently recognised for their contributions in engineering and medicine, receiving high honours from notable institutions.
Professor Raymond Yeung from the Faculty of Engineering has been named the recipient of the IEEE 2021 Richard W. Hamming Medal. The award, which is one of the highest honours in electrical and electronics engineering, recognises Professor Yeung’s fundamental contributions to information theory and his pioneering work in network coding. Not only is this the first time this award has been won by an Asian researcher since its establishment in 1988, it is also the first time that homegrown research in this area has been recognised at this level.
Professor Tony Mok of the Faculty of Medicine was named a Giant of Cancer Care by OncLive®, a leading multimedia cancer resource in the US, recognising his contributions in lung cancer research. Professor Mok is among 15 world-renowned leaders in the field of oncology on the list of 2020 Giants of Cancer Care® Award, selected out of 800 nominations. He is the first and only scholar from an Asian institution being listed.

In addition to receiving research accolades, our teaching performance is also well recognised. Professor Carmen Wong of the Faculty of Medicine was awarded the 2020 Hong Kong University Grants Committee (UGC) Teaching Award (General Faculty Members), in recognition of her contributions and achievements in medical education and interdisciplinary and multi-sectoral educational collaborations. Furthermore, Professor Paul Lam of the Centre for Learning Enhancement And Research was a member of the inter-institutional AIE-AR Team, which was named recipient of the 2020 UGC Teaching Award (Teams).
