CUHKNEWSLETTER An Only Son's Choice Tam P i n g - k wa n , Mathematics Department I am my parents' only child and when I graduated from The Chinese University they were already getting on in years. So I chose to stay with the University and, in these years, have been much pleased by the achievements of many of our graduates. (Translation) A picture taken in 1965, outside the gate of the old United College campus on Bonham Road, when academics of the Mathematics Department gathered to bid farewell to Dr. Wong Yau- chuen as he was leaving for doctoral studies in Britain. From left to right were myself, Mr. Lam Ming- fai, Mr. Yip Kai-wing, Dr. S.T. Chow, Dr. N. N. Chen and Dr. Wong. Both Dr. Chen and Mr. Yip received their long service awards in 1991. Students, Source of My Joy and Worries Hui Kwan-yu, Chemistry Department A picture of United College chemistry graduates, class of 1969. The teachers were sitty on a bench in the gront row. From left: myself, Prof. Ma Lin, Dr. S. N. Lam, and Mr. L.C. Tang. Mr Tang was our lab superintendent. He retired quite a while ago and is now in Australia. Time flies! It seems just a moment since I started teaching here, and teaching has been my life-long passion! In recent years, I have noticed that the earlier generation of Chinese University students tended to be more hardworking and had a greater desire for knowledge. They would seek opportunities for postgraduate education abroad and indeed many are now successfully holding key positions in various organizations. Students nowadays, I am sorry to say, are not what they used to be, and many of them simply spend too much time on part-time jobs.
