Mr. Steven S.Y. Ngai Lecturer , Department o f Social Work M r. Steven S.Y. Ngai graduated from the University o f Hong Kong w ith a B.Soc.Sc. degree and obtained his MSW degree from The Chinese University o f Hong Kong. Before joining this university, Mr. Ngai worked as an outreaching social worker in the Hong Kong Christian Service. As a social worker, Mr. Ngai has made important contributions to the development of outreaching social work service in Hong Kong and overseas. In 1989, he was invited by the Singapore Council o f Social Service to conduct a training workshop for youth workers and to advise on the setting up o f an outreaching social work service in Singapore. Mr. Ngai is currently a co-opted member o f the Coordinating Com mittee o f Outreaching Social Work o f the Hong Kong Council o f Social Service. He also serves on the Education Committee of the Hong Kong Social Workers' Association. Mr. Ngai's main research interests are social work philosophy, outreaching social work and youth problems. He has completed several research projects, respectively entitled 'Occu pational Stress, Social Support and Burn-out Syndrome among Outreaching Social Workers in Hong Kong', 'Stress and Social Support among Young People' and 'Need Study o f Temporary Shelter fo r Youth-at-risk' . The findings o f these studies have been published in international journals and the proceedings o f conferences. He is now pursuing a research project on 'Ethical Issues in Social Welfare Administration and in Social Work Practice in Hong Kong'. Mr. Ngan Man-piu, Nelson Senior Computer O fficer I I , Computer Services Centre M r. Ngan Man-piu, Nelson completed his secondary education in Hong Kong in 1969, and furthered his studies in Canada. In 1974, he obtained a B.Sc. degree with distinction at M cG ill University, where he continued to live for almost 10 years, working at the university's Computing Centre. There he participated in the development o f the multi-user system for interactive computing (MUSIC), a computer system that The Chinese University is currently operating as one o f the major systems for aca demic users. Mr. Ngan returned to Hong Kong in 1985 and joined the Systems Programming Section o f the Computer Services Centre o f this univer sity as assistant computer officer, mainly to provide support for the MUSIC. Subsequently, his duties expanded to include the support o f various other systems such as VM , RACF and HP-UX. He was promoted to computer officer in July 1987 and appointed as head o f the Systems Programming Section in December 1990. He became head o f the Computer Opera tions Section in Ap ril 1991 and was promoted to senior computer officer II in July o f the same year. PROFILES 23
