The Nanjing delegation gave a presentation on 5th October on the topic of 'Experiencing Hong Kong'. To enhance their understanding of Hong Kong, United College arranged for them to v i s it the Leg i s l a t i ve Council, ICAC, the Planning Department o f the HKSAR, the Hi gh Court, TVB, and the University of Hong Kong. Budding scholars from Un i t ed College w i l l pay their return visit to Nanjing from 27th December 2000 to 5th January 2001. Cheung popping the champagne cork O n Friday, 27th October 2000, the Institute of Chinese Studies (ICS) held a cocktail reception in the foyer of Cho Yiu Conference Hall to celebrate three events: the p u b l i c a t i on o f Growing Up with The Chinese University 一 CUHK & ICS: A Photo History 1949-1997; the launch of Century China, a cultural webpage; and the tenth anniversary of Twenty-First Century, a bimonthly journal for Chinese intellectuals, which together marked a new stage of development of the institute. Prof. Ambrose King, acting vice-chancellor, gave a welcoming speech on the occasion; Dr. Thomas H.C. Cheung, adviser of the Federation of CUHK Alumni Associations, popped the champagne cork; and Dr. Lee Hon Chiu, chairman of the University Council, proposed a toast. Mr. L iu He, board chairman of the webpage company concerned, who made a special trip from Beijing to attend the reception, offered congratulatory remarks, while Dr. F.C. Chen, director of ICS, gave a vote of thanks to round up the ceremony. The occasion attracted well over a hundred guests including staff members from different faculties, students, alumni, as well as friends and well-wishers of the University and ICS, who apart from the reception itself were offered two additional features: a demonstration and hands-on viewing of Century China in the adjoining conference room, as well as a short video programme covering the history and development of the four constituent colleges, the University, and ICS from 1949 to 1997. Two Colleges Celebrate Anniversaries • United College celebrated its 44th anniversary on 20th October at the Sir Run Run Shaw Hall. Officiating at the ceremony were the Hon. Mr. Justice K.H. Woo, Justice of Appeal of the High Court, and Dr. Thomas H.C. Cheung, vice-chairman of the College Board of Trustees. A birthday party was held on the college campus immediately after the ceremony. A lion dance performed by the college's Kung Fu Club and the cutting of a 40-pound birthday cake presented by the College StaffAssociation marked the climax of the day. This was followed by an anniversary luncheon, held at the staff common room and attended by over 70 trustees, donors, alumni, and staff members. The highlight of anniversary activities, as in previous years, was the Feast-for- Thousands held in the evening, which registered a record turnout of over 1,500 guests. Proposing a toast to United College • Chung Chi College celebrated its 49th anniversary on 27th October. A series of celebratory events were organized by the College Student Union and the College Alumni Association. The 49th Founders' Day Thanksgiving Service was held on the morning of 27th October. Mr. Thomas Kw o k , v i ce- chairman and managing director of Sun Hung Kai Properties Ltd., was invited to be the guest speaker. In the afternoon, events coordinated by the College Student Union took place, which included a fun fair, a tug-of-war, a round-the-campus run, a s i ng i ng con t es t, and a c o o k i ng competition. And in the evening, some 2,000 participants took part in the Feast- for-Thousands at the college's Lingnan Stadium. On the same day, the L in Dao Yang Memorial Garden was officially opened on the Chung Chi campus. The garden was built in memory of Dr. L in Dao-yang who was president of Chung Chi College from 1955 to 1960. Officiating at the ceremony were Mr. George Hung, chair of the Chung Chi College Board o f Trustees, Prof. Rance Lee, head of Chung Chi College, Prof. L in Hung-chang, representative of the donor, Mr. Stanley Hui, chair of the Chung Chi College Alumni Association, and Miss Chan Yuen-yau, chair of the Representative Council of the Chung Chi Student Union. Dr. Lin (1888-1993) was a philosopher, athlete, politician, writer, and scientist. As an expert forester, he made significant contribution towards the conservation of soil, watering, and forest resources in China. He was responsible for the negotiations with the government for the relocation of the college to its present site in the Ma L iu Shui Valley.
