As part of our continuous effort to improve services, the University Library System conducted a survey from November 1 - 30, 2007. The Library received 2,928 valid responses and half of the respondents supplied written comments.
Our Responses to Your Comments
Compliments:
297 comments praised and complimented the Library staff and services. Many comments used words like "good", "very satisfied", "friendly", etc. Below are some notable comments:
- "The library helps me a lot in the academic study or as well as in the developing of the hobbies. I love it very much!"
- "The librarian's service provided is great. They are always willing to help students and answer our questions. I do think the resources subscribed by library are useful."
- "Very good initiative. Lots of improvement during the past 7 years."
- "Overall, I have very good impression in the library services. Staff are nice and helpful, the electronic resource is easy to reach.
- "The libraries of CUHK are much better than my hometown university. In fact I am very satisfied with all the libraries in CUHK."

Collection:
Comments:
- More e-journals and e-books.
- Increase textbooks for some areas.
- Acquire more updated versions of books.
Responses:
- In the past two years, the Library, in collaboration with the teaching departments has succeeded in strengthening and strategically leveraging library resources. Specifically, the ebook collection has increased from 66,000 in 2005 to over 800,000 titles this year and e-journal access increased to over 53,000 unique titles covering various disciplines. More electronic resources will also be acquired by the Medical Library in its planning to become a more fully electronic library in journal access in 2009. The Library is committed to meet the increasing demand for 24x7 easy electronic access to research resources whenever funding allows.
- Extracts from ULS Collection Development Policy Statement: "Textbooks which usually outdate rapidly, do not form an important target for collection. On the other hand, classic textbooks which are standard and authoritative texts containing a comprehensive presentation of the principles of a subject will be acquired."
- In general, updated versions of academic books will be acquired. In light of the comments on individual subject areas, Library will liaise with respective teaching departments to update the collection.
Computing Facilities:
Comments:
- More computers and scanners.
- Printer speed too slow.
- Install MS Office in all computers.
Responses:
- If funding is available, more computers and scanners will be purchased.
- The Library will install higher-speed printers in coming academic year.
- To ensure the accessibility to various information sources, the Library should have some PCs designated for searching Library resources and surfing the Internet, not all PCs will be installed with MS Office.
Space and Facilities:
Comments:
- More seats for individual study.
- More group study rooms.
- Set up discussion zones in branch libraries.
- More comfortable desks and chairs.
- Lift for reaching the Law Library.
- Keep the washrooms clean.
- More photocopying machines accepting Octopus card.
- Add value machines (AVM) are frequently out of order.
Responses:
- The new library extension to the University Library can cater for more seats for individual study, more group study rooms and casual seating.
- If funding is available, more group discussion rooms and seats will be available in the Medical Library in 2009.
- The Chung Chi College Library has changed its late reading room to group discussion zone during the day.
- Learning Commons will be available in various Libraries for easier access to various electronic resources.
- Please contact staff of the Law Library for accessing it with lifts of the TKP Building.
- Additional manpower has been allocated for cleaning the washrooms.
- More photocopiers would be changed to accept Octopus card.
- Please inform Library staff if the AVM are out of order. AVM will be phased out in phases.
Library Policies and Procedures:
Comments:
- Extend the loan period of books and audio visual materials.
- Increase the maximum number of renewals for library materials.
- Provide online forms for requesting inter-branch book delivery service.
Responses:
- The Library would consider doubling the loan quota and loan period for all borrower categories.
- The maximum number of renewals has been increased from two to three times effective September 2007.
- Effective January 2008, the maximum number of renewals for the HKALL items has been increased to two.
- The Library would check with the Library supplier if online form for requesting inter-branch book delivery is available.
Noise:
Comments:
- Excessive noise and use of cell phones in Libraries.
- Stricter enforcement of mobile phone policy.
Responses:
- In an attempt to maintain a quiet study area, the Library has created quiet floors, mobile phone areas, and discussion zones in recent years. Signs are also posted to remind students to keep their voice low.
- Library staff will continue to patrol and monitor the noise level to ensure quiet environment is maintained, but we still rely on students behaving in a considerate manner.
Temperature and Lighting:
Comments:
- The temperature is too low.
- Lighting should be improved.
Response:
- In the past years, the University Library and Branch Libraries underwent major renovations to improve the study environment. If there is a particular location that is too cold or need better lighting, please let us know and we will inform Estates Management Office for adjustment.

Responses:
- Late reading rooms are available at all branch libraries except the Architecture Library. A 24-hour study room is available in the Medical Library.
- A 24/7 area will be built in the new library extension to the University Library.
