    Over the years, the Chinese University of Hong Kong Library has acquired very finely reproduced artworks made by specialists including the Nigensha Publishing Co. Ltd. in Japan and kept in the New Asia College Ch’ien Mu Library. The Collection consists of calligraphy and paintings reproduced from the Tang to the Qing Dynasty. The originals of these artworks are housed in different museums such as National Palace Museum, Taipei, Shanghai Museum, and British Museum. The artwork reproduction requires a high standard of professional and specialized skills.

    Mr. Liu Yichang

    劉以鬯先生於6月8日辭世,享年99歲。香港中文大學圖書館深表哀悼。

    劉以鬯先生為香港重要作家,原名劉同繹,1918年生於上海。他自言多年來「幾乎一直在做着編輯副刊的工作」,於《國民公報》《掃蕩報》(後易名《和平日報》)編副刊,後創辦懷正文化社,出版中國新文學作品。1948年冬劉以鬯先生離滬到港,於《香港時報》編副刊,又先後任《星島周報》執行編輯、《西點》雜誌主編、新加坡《益世報》主筆兼編副刊、吉隆坡《聯邦日報》總編輯、香港文學雜誌社社長等。期間亦因報館工作薪水太低,「不得不生產大量『行貨』(流行小說)」,自認寫得比較認真的作品有《酒徒》、《寺內》、《一九九七》和《對倒》等。2001年、2011年劉以鬯先生先後獲香港特區政府頒發榮譽勳章及銅紫荊星章,2013年獲香港藝術發展局頒發「2012香港藝術發展獎」之「傑出藝術貢獻獎」,2015年獲頒「終身成就獎」,對於香港文學的貢獻備受肯定。

    身為愛書人,劉以鬯先生深明舊書刊所盛載的文化價值。去年3月8日,他將蒐求得來的珍貴書籍慷慨捐贈予中大圖書館,其中包括劉以鬯先生的首部小說單行本《失去的愛情》、寄託其五十年代南洋經驗的《蕉風椰雨》及《星嘉坡故事》,以及姚雪垠《長夜》、《差半車麥稭》、李健吾《好事近》等懷正文化社珍本,實為香港文學研究提供了重要的參考材料。中大圖書館對此再表謝忱,並願劉以鬯先生安息。

    Professor Yao Ke (1905-1991) was an important playwright in Modern Chinese Drama history. He devoted himself to incorporating elements for the traditional Chinese stage into modern drama and film. His history play Sorrows of the Forbidden City (清宫秘史), which premiered in Shanghai in 1941, ran for more than a hundred performance. In 1948 he moved to Hong Kong and resumed his interests in writing historical dramas, among which Xi Shi (西施) and Qin Shi Huang (秦始皇) are still remembered today. From 1961 to 1967, Yao Ke further extended his influence to the academy by joining the Department of Chinese at the United College as a lecturer.
