The Chinese University of Hong Kong Library is pleased to announce a new publication “An Annotated Bibliography of the Classical Writings of Hong Kong Poets. Sequel:  Poetry Societies " (Call number: Z3107.H6 X5362 2021) compiled by Ms. Y.W. Chau. The book in University Library Series No.9 has been published by the Chinese University Press in January 2021.

About the Book

During times of political turmoil over the past 150 years, literati from Mainland China took refuge in Hong Kong.  They would form various shi- and ci-poetry societies to carry on the Chinese poetic tradition. It is a pity that the poetry of most of these societies has not been published before. In order to uncover a hidden splendor, this volume, a sequel to the previous compilation,  An Annotated Bibliography of the Classical Writings of Hong Kong Poets which focused on individual poet’s works, introduces almost 150 shi- and ci-poetry societies active in Hong Kong from the late Qing Dynasty up to 1997,with the annotations of 49 anthologies compiled by 36 poetry societies. Annotation includes basic bibliographic information and literary commentaries that help to understand the formation, periods of activity, membership, events and the collected poetry of these societies. Together, these two bibliographies, pioneer compilations on a topic never previously covered, offer invaluable information on the understanding of the development of classical Chinese literature in Hong Kong, and form a very worthwhile and unique addition to the research tools in Hong Kong literature.
