T he foundation stone laying ceremony for the Fok Ying Tung Remote Sensing Science Building was held on 22 August. Officiating at the ceremony wereMr. Tung Chee-hwa, vice-chairman of National Political Consultative Conference; Mr. Gao Siren, director of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in Hong Kong; Prof. Guo Huadong, deputy secretary-general of the Chinese Academy of Sciences; Mr. Ian Fok Chun-wan, director of the Fok Ying Tung Foundation; and Prof. Lawrence J. Lau, Vice- Chancellor of CUHK. Mr. Ian Fok Chun-wan anticipated that the establishment of the Science Building would contribute to improving the human living environment and promoting the well-being of the Chinese people. Prof. Lau thanked the late Mr. Fok Ying-tung for his support to the University’s research. He envisaged that the setting up of the Science Building ‘will substantially boost our research capabilities in the field of Geoinformation and Earth Sciences and enable CUHK to participate more actively in national or international programmes in space remote sensing’. The buildingwill mark the apex of the CUHK campus. This structure, with a gross floor area of 2,090 sq. m., will house a satellite antenna control room, a remote sensing data receiving, processing and application services hub, research laboratories, and a multi-purpose teaching and conference room. The building will be connected to the Satellite Remote Sensing Receiving Station established in 2005. Upon completion, the building will be one of the most important satellite remote sensing research facilities in Southern China and the region. Researchers based there will launch massive studies on the prediction and monitoring of natural disasters, exploration of natural resources, architecture and habitation study, and urban planning, etc. The building will also take on public education and promote Geoinformation and Remote Sensing Sciences to the public. 霍英東遙感科學館奠基 Foundation Stone Laid for Fok Ying Tung Remote Sensing Science Building 左起:郭華東教授、霍震寰先生、高祀仁先生、董建華先生、呂新華先生、劉遵義校長、林琿教授 From left: Prof. Guo Huadong, Mr. Ian Fok Chun-wan, Mr. Gao Siren, Mr. Tung Chee-hwa, Mr. Lu Xinhua, Prof. Lawrence J. Lau, Prof. Lin Hui 何謂遙感探測? What is Remote Sensing? Human beings have long been trying to explore the world in which they live by gathering information of the natural environment. In contrast to in-situ sensing, remote sensing is the science of acquiring information about an object without coming into physical contact with the object under investigation. It can usually be achieved by using sensing devices installed on a plane or satellite. Remote sensing makes it possible to collect data on dangerous or inaccessible areas. It is a useful tool for us to understand and monitor our physical and human environment.
