The University is saddened by the loss of a respected leader and friend, Prof. Omar Wing, founding Dean of Engineering and Emeritus Professor of the Department of Information Engineering, who passed away peacefully on 28 December 2020.
Professor Wing received a BS from the University of Tennessee in 1950, an MS from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1952 and an EngScD from Columbia University in 1959. Between 1956 and 1993, he was a member of the faculty at Columbia’s Department of Electrical Engineering, where he served as the Chair for two terms. An established researcher in circuits and systems, he authored or co-authored dozens of journal and conference papers, served in a number of international professional bodies, and worked extensively in the industry, receiving various academic and teaching awards and honours.
In 1991, Professor Wing joined CUHK and took on the role as Dean of the newly founded Faculty of Engineering until 1997, serving also as the Chairman of the Department of Information Engineering between 1991 and 1992. He played a pivotal role in the Faculty’s development, creating new departments and strengthening existing ones, and was a mentor to its members. Under his leadership, the Faculty was placed in a strong position to meet the educational and research challenges of the digital revolution.
In memory of Professor Wing’s lifelong commitment to education and research and to carry on with his vision, the Faculty will establish a scholarship for engineering students in his name. Donations are now accepted until 28 February 2021. For more information, please follow this link.
