C h o h- M i n g L i , received the honorary degree of L L . D . on A p r i l 29 d u r i ng the sesquicentennial celebrations at the Un i v e r s i ty of M i c h i g a n. O n tha t occasion, amo ng the 800 heads of higher education wh o sent their congratulations, 300 attended the celebrations, w i t h 180 of t h em f r om overseas. F i f t e en o f these educational leaders were i n v i t ed to speak. D r . L i had the honour to be one of the several major speakers. H is speech on “ H i g h er Ed u c a t i on i n the De v e l o p i ng Countries in T o m o r r o w 's Wo r l d ” w i l l be published in the Sesquicentennial V o l ume entitled Higher Education in Tomorrow's World. T h e C i t a t i on fo r D r . L i when the honorary degree was conferred reads as follows. “ C H O H - M I N G LI, Vice-Chancellor of The Chinese University of Hong Kong. Dr. Li taught in China during the Sino-Japanese War, helped subsequently to administer rehabilitation there, and then served on the faculty of his Alma Mater at Berkeley, C a l i f o r n i a, before assuming his present post. Having followed economic developments in China all the while, he has been able in part to keep that nation within the pale ofinternationalcomprehension. Let us hopefully suppose that his superb intellect and energy, so characteristic of his race, foretell the benefits which shall accrue to us all when his native land concludes her travail and begins again to share her resources of mind and spirit with the remainder of the human family. It is a privilege to confer on kirn now the degree Doctor of Laws.” CONFERENCE ON TEACHING METHODS T h e second Conference on T e a c h i ng Me t h o ds was held on M a y 1 , 3 , a n d 4 at the C i ty Ha l l. I t was organized ma i n ly to h o ld f u r t h er discussions of the basic issues dealt w i t h in the first conference held early this year i n January. A t a meeting of the Vice-Chancellor w i t h the Deans of the three Faculties in Ma r c h, it was agreed that the Deans w o u ld call separate meetings of the Faculties for a more t h o r o u gh deliberation on the problems of T e a c h i ng Me t h o d s encountered in each Faculty. T h e reports presented by the Ch a i rmen of the meetings are expected to c o n t r i b u te f u r t h er to the academic p r o g r amme of the Un i v e r s i t y.
