Gastroenterology straddles internal medicine and surgery,

two disciplines known for their pronounced mutual distrust. Yet, treatment of complex gastrointestinal disorders demand new development that only close cooperation of different disciplines can bring about. With a vision to solve digestive disease problems, Professor Joseph Sung, founder of the Institute, assembled experts from various specialties to create a productive multidisciplinary research environment.

The Institute of Digestive Disease was thus born. Its establishment cemented the alliance of medical and surgical gastroenterologists and other healthcare professionals. Since the beginning, they have been working closely together, sharing resources and expertise. Our strong culture of collaboration and firm focus on interdisciplinary work have helped us produced research that changed local and global clinical practices that ultimately contribute to our goal to cure and alleviate suffering afflicted by digestive diseases.
