Abstract
This article describes an introductory course in effective human relationships for health professionals, run at the Universiti Hospital, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. It raises a number of issues regarding the relevance of counselling for the culture of a mainly Muslim Asian country, for the culture of health professionals, and for the culture of a hospital. The results of this project indicate that counselling has relevance within all these cultural contexts, but raises ongoing concerns.
