Abstract
This article discusses and analyses the problems encountered in establishing library education programmes. These problems include source of the students, curriculum design, recruitment of the faculty, recognition of the professional qualification, and other related issues. As an illustration, the experiences in Hong Kong which has not had professional training courses for librarians until very recently are drawn upon and described.
