Professor Kwan Mei Po awarded 2021 American Association of Geographers (AAG) Wilbanks Prize
Professor Kwan Mei Po has been been selected to receive the 2021 American Association of Geographers (AAG) Wilbanks Prize for Transformational Research in Geography. This award recognizes geographers whose research has made transformational contributions to geography, geographic information science or to science and society more broadly.

Professor Kwan Mei Po and Prof. Huang Bo obtained the RGC Collaborative Research Fund 2020-21
Professor Kwan Mei Po and Professor Huang Bo have been awarded research funding under the Collaborative Research Fund (CRF) 2020/21 - Collaborative Research Project Grant (CRPG) Proposals for the project “Deploying Geospatial Big Data and Real-time Mobile Sensing to Assess the Health Impacts of Individual Exposure to Green/blue Spaces, Light at Night, Air Pollution, and Noise (GLAN)” and “Assessment and implementation of non-pharmaceutical interventions to avoid COVID-19 resurgences: Accounting for human mobility, contacts and behavioral change using both big and small data” respectively.
Professor Chen Yongqin David and Yim Hung Lam Steve awarded the National Key R&D Program of China funding
Professor Chen Yongqin David, in collaboration with Professor Yim Hung Lam Steve, has been awarded a funding of RMB 2,830,000 for the project "大灣區極端天氣氣候防災減災和適應的技術與對策" under the National Key R&D Program of China (國家重點研發計畫) by the Ministry of Science and Technology of the People's Republic of China (中華人民共和國科學技術部), from 1 January 2020 to 31 December 2023.

Professor Kwan Mei Po has been awarded the lifelong honorary title of AAG Fellow. The AAG Fellows is a program, started in 2018, to recognize geographers who have made significant contributions to advancing geography.
Professor Huang Bo received Hong Kong ICT Awards 2018 - Smart People Award
Prof. Huang Bo and his group members have developed an efficient smartphone APP named "TouchAir" for the general public to access real time air pollutant concentrations at any location in Hong Kong and Mainland China with high accuracy, high resolution and full coverage. This APP has won the Hong Kong ICT Awards 2018 - Smart People Award. Ms. Carrie Lam, the Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, attended the award presentation ceremony held in the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Center on April 4. TouchAir, with its server programs running on the Ali cloud platform, has been released since September 2015 with both its iOS and Android versions available on App Store (for iPhone and iPad users) and Google Play/Baidu Mobile Phone Assistant (for Android smartphone users).

Delegation of Lanzhou University visited our Department
A delegation of two faculty members and eight students from the College of Earth and Environmental Sciences, Lanzhou University visited our Department on 20-27 January 2018. The delegation met with our colleagues to discuss collaboration in teaching and research and visited the Wetland Park, Tai Po Kau Nature Reserve and Geoparks in Hong Kong. Prof. Gao Xiang delivered a seminar in the Department on the multi-scale assessment of ecosystem stability in the nature reserves in arid deserts.
Colleagues of our Department published important scientific findings in Nature Climate Change
Profs. Chen Yongqin and Lau Ngar-Cheung, together with Prof. Li Jianfeng of Hong Kong Baptist University and Prof. Thian Yew Gan of University of Alberta, recently published their research findings on the elevated increases in human-perceived temperature under climate warming in Nature Climate Change (January 2018). Advanced Workshop on Urban Studies and Smart Cities held in the Department
Our Department, jointly with Urban Studies Programme and Institute of Future Cities organized the one-day workshop on 28 April 2017. A number of renowned experts and scholars in urban studies, smart cities, sustainable cities and urban modeling from UK, USA, Sweden and Hong Kong were invited to give presentations on a wide range of research topics. Colleague of the department met with the international experts to discuss research issues and explore collaboration on the following day.
Professor Michael Batty delivered Lecture Series on Smart Cities
Professor Michael Batty, a world renowned geographer and scholar on urban studies, has recently visited our Department again and delivered a series of four lectures on " The Smart City Defined ", "Data and Technology: Big Data, Open Data, Data Infrastructures ", " Urban Analytics: Networks, Mobility and a New Theory of Cities " and " Digital Urban Services: Participation, and Crowd-Sourcing "on 12, 19, 20 and 24 April 2017, respectively. He is a VC Distinguished Visiting Professor of The Chinese University of Hong Kong and Bartlett Professor of Planning, University College London.
Prof. LIN Hui received distinguished award from AAG
Prof. LIN Hui received the E. Willard and Ruby S. Miller Award 2017 from The American Association of Geographers in its Annual Meeting held in Boston in early April，in recognition of his outstanding performance and important contribution in geographical research and teaching (http://www.aag.org/cs/awards/miller). Prof. Lin is the first recipient of this distinguished award from universities and research institutes in Asia.
Prof. LIN Hui received Research Mentorship Award
Prof. LIN Hui has recently been awarded the Research Mentorship Award 2016 by the Faculty of Social Science in recognition of his outstanding performance and accomplishments in postgraduate supervision. He received congratulations from some of his current and former postgraduate students in the Faculty's Appreciation Achievement Award Celebration ceremony held on 18 March 2017.

Delegation of Lanzhou University visited our Department
A delegation of four faculty members and seven students from the College of Earth and Environmental Sciences, Lanzhou University visited our Department on 15-22 January 2017. The delegation met with our colleagues to discuss collaboration in teaching and research and visited Science Park, City Gallery, and flood prevention facilities in Hong Kong. Prof. LI Zhuolun delivered a seminar on the environmental evolution and climate change in the Late Quaternary Period in the Alxa Desert.
