Requirement

  1. Applicants should obtain a bachelor degree (normally achieving an average grade of not lower than "B") or equivalent in recognized tertiary institutions and fulfil the general qualifications required for admission to the Graduate School (for details, please visit https://www.gs.cuhk.edu.hk/admissions/admissions/requirements);
  2. Applicants must submit a written statement (400-600 words on 1 page A4 size) explaining the purpose of their application and their interest in Cultural Studies. Applicants are strongly encouraged to refer to the ‘What is Intercultural Studies?’ link on our webpage. 
    The written statement must answer TWO questions. The first question is required: 
    (1) How would studying in our program further your career plans?
    In addition, for the second question, applicants must choose to answer ONE of the following questions:
    (2) What ONE critical, cultural, or media theory encapsulates your understanding of Cultural Studies? Why?
    (3) Choose ONE film, television, literary, or visual text, and conduct a basic cultural analysis.
    (4) Which ONE course in our list of offerings would be your top priority for enrollment? Why?


Application Method

Procedures for Online Application

"Note: Admission review will NOT start unless ALL the following documents are received and ALL application produces have been completed."

 

Step 1:  Successful submission of your application via the Application for Admission to Postgraduate Programmes.

 

Step 2:  You will receive an email and see a “Receipt of Application” including your Application No. Print it for your future reference. If you see error message(s), please enter the required information according to the instructions

 

Step 3:  You may go to the Application for Admission to Postgraduate Programmes to perform the following actions:

 

-       Pay application fee in the section “View Application” if you have not settled it during the submission of online application;

-       Amend application information in the section “Amend Application”;

-       Download forms in the section “Download Forms”;

-       Submit Confidential Recommendations (2 copies)

 

Via system: Submit 2 referees’ information in the section “My referee(s)” after settling the application fee and you can check the referees’ submission status in the same section. Your referee will then receive an invitation email to login the Online Confidential Recommendation System to complete the Confidential Recommendation/ Referee’s Report.

Please check with the referess before you input the email account. 

 

By hardcopy: Print Confidential Recommendation Form (2 copies) in the section “Download Forms”

 

Step 4: Upload supporting documents in the section “Upload Supporting Documents”

Required Supporting Documents

 

Step 5: You must submit the following supporting documents to our general office in order to complete your application. (Room 301, Leung Kau Kui Building, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shatin, N.T. Hong Kong) by the application deadline.

 

  1. Full official transcript (with grading scheme) of  all tertiary level studies ( If your transcript does not indicate the grading scheme(积分说明), please send the grading scheme which MUST indicate your grade, such as 90-100 A grade, 80-90 B grade, 70-80 C grade with Registrar’s chop (教务处 & 教务处印章) etc, to us via post to our progamme immediately;
  2. Copies of all tertiary certificates of academic/professional qualifications;
  3. Score reports/certificates showing you have fulfilled the English language proficiency requirement for admission to the Graduate School;
  4. Confidential recommendations from two referees respectively*;
  5. Assessment report from the Hong Kong Council for Accreditation of Academic & Vocational Qualifications (HKCAAVQ) on the level of qualification obtained for degrees awarded by overseas universities by distance learning or by completing a curriculum of short duration.
  6. Copies of identity card or passport; and
  7. Personal Statement; 
  8. Online Verification Report of Higher Education Qualification Certificate issued by the CHESICC**
  9. The University may require applicants to submit additional information or documentary proof if deemed necessary.

 

* Official transcripts and confidential recommendations must reach respective Graduate Divisions directly from the University and referees, or in sealed envelopes and sent by the applicant with other supporting documents to our department.

**Applicants who obtained degrees from universities in Mainland China are required to provide an Online Verification Report of Higher Education Qualification Certificate (教育部学历证书电子注册备案表) issued by the CHESICC (学信网) together with other supporting documents. Please refer to the official website of the CHESICC on the sample of the Online Verification Report of Higher Education Qualification Certificate at https://www.chsi.com.cn/xlcx/bgys.jsp.

 

Step 6: You must upload softcopies via the Application for Admission to Postgraduate Programmes (in the section of “Upload Supporting Documents”) before sending out the copies to our department for initial reference. Please always quote the Application no. in your future correspondences.

Tuition Fee

1 year full-time: HKD$125,000 per annum (subject to review)
2 years part-time: HKD$62,500 per annum (subject to review)

2 installments for full-time students

4 installments for part-time students

Additional tuition fee will be charged for each course taken after the normative study period.
