The Department is unique in its range in Hong Kong in teaching across the canon in English literature. English Literature has a long and influential history, chronicling many centuries of knowledge and wisdom. The Department is committed to sustaining and enhancing the study of English literature, offering comprehensive introduction to this important field. Faculty members have made distinguished contributions particularly in the areas of Romanticism, Modernism and Post-Modernism.
Julian Lamb, Simon Haines and Jason Gleckman are specialists in Shakespeare and Early Modern English. Romanticism is also a central focus of the department. Li Ou and Simon Haines have published important research on the works of Keats, Wordsworth and Byron in some of the world’s leading journals. Michael O’Sullivan and Evelyn Chan are experts on the many varieties of Modernist literatures. Grant Hamilton and Eli Park Sorensen work on postmodern fiction and the contemporary novel.
