16 Chung Chi College students from various departments, who had joined the Service-Learning Programme (Mainland), went to Yangshuo and Guilin in Guangxi from July 13 to August 3 to take part in a social service programme. The service recipients were local high school students and peasants. This was the fourth consecutive years of the programme.
A three-week English learning camp was organized by the CUHK students to help the local students to improve their English proficiency and build up their confidence in using the language. The camp was conducted in small groups. Forty local students were divided into four small teaching groups so that they could communicate more efficiently. Through a series of teaching activities, the local students not only made progress in their English, but also in personal growth, leadership skills and team spirit.
In addition, our students also visited the rural villages to share simple medical knowledge of chronic diseases with the elderly peasants. At the end of the programme, all the participants found that it had been an invaluable experience.
