About the exhibition “Glow Like That”
Light is not only a natural phenomenon but also a product of technological advancement. It is an empty signifier awaiting a narrative; it is undefined, fuzzy at the edges. Fluid and amorphous, light therefore has endless possibilities. When interacting with light, certain kinds of surfaces take on an iridescent sheen or reflect their surroundings, producing a shimmering or radiant “glow”. Presented by K11 Art Foundation as the first contemporary art exhibition held in Victoria Dockside, Glow Like That features 16 artists and collectives from countries including China, the US, and Japan, showcasing an impressive array of paintings, video works, sculptures, and installations. While some of the works demonstrate the various forms of “glow” characteristic of this light-saturated era, others reveal their functions and symbolic significances in contemporary society.
Brimming with beautiful imagery associated with light, Glow Like That also echoes the spectacular harbour view that the exhibition space overlooks. From the vantage point of Glow Like That in Victoria Dockside, visitors will feast on the opulence of the gleam and glimmer of the city. The glistering waves of the harbour and the exhibition shine a light on each other, bolstering one another’s splendour and sparking ruminations on the relationship between light and everyday life.

A personal exploration through a twenty year curatorial career that spans working at one of the most important contemporary art museums in the world, to working for one of the largest collections of British art in the world, to making exhibitions in an iconic private museum that, at just 7 years old, is already one of the most visited destination museums in South East Asia. Questioning the definition of ‘public’ and ‘private’ in the 21st century cultural sector as well as the influence of a rapidly expanding and evermore diluted global art world, this presentation will be both far-reaching and discursive.
About Mr. Adrian George
Adrian George is a curator, commissioner and educator with over 19 years experience working in some of the most influential art institutions in the world including the New Museum, New York; Tate Modern; Tate Liverpool and the UK Government Art Collection, UK which represents British visual culture in over 300 locations around the world.
Adrian is an author and art critic. His publication The Curator’s Handbook (Thames & Hudson 2015) is available in six languages and is used as a foundational text in many curating courses. A member of the International Association of Art Critics his text Minimalism: A Circular Timeline of Nothingness was published last year.
Adrian is a National Advisor to the Arts Council of Wales, a selector for Wales in Venice at the Venice Biennale 2017 selecting James Richards and 2019 selecting Sean Edwards. He is an advisor to the Board of the Bomb Factory Art Foundation, London – an artist run studio and gallery space housed in an old ammunitions factory, and until November 2017 Adrian was a Representative at Court of the Royal College of Art, London.
Adrian is currently Associate Director and Head of Exhibitions at ArtScience Museum, Singapore, where he is responsible for a team of curators, project managers, designers and technicians who conceive and deliver up to five exhibitions per year across 21 gallery spaces totaling 5000sqm. His most recent curatorial project – a collaboration between ArtScience Museum and National Gallery Singapore – titled Minimalism: Space. Light. Object – runs until 12 April 2019 and was listed as one of the most influential exhibitions in SE Asia in 2018.

Art and Museum Lecture Series featuring Dr. Michaela Pejčochová
Taking the middle way.
Early exhibitions of modern Chinese painting organised in Europe in the 1920s and 1930s
Date:14 January 2019 (Mon)
Time:1:30pm – 3:15pm
Venue:C5, T.C. Cheng Building, CUHK
Medium:English
The talk will introduce the first exhibitions of modern Chinese paintings in Europe, which were organised between the mid-1920s and the mid-1930s by Chinese artists settled in Europe, Chinese teachers and reformists Liu Haisu and Xu Beihong, and the Czech collector Vojtěch Chytil. During less than a decade, many European cultural centres in more than ten countries saw a large selection of modern Chinese ink painting and in a number of places, the exhibitions became a starting point of the subsequent formation of museum collections of this material. The talk will discuss both, the strategies of the organisers of these shows, and the impact on local art scenes and public collections. A comparison of different types of these exhibition projects will bring to light specific aspects of the official exhibitions organised by Liu Haisu and Xu Beihong, as well as those put together by the private collector Vojtěch Chytil.
A piece of China in Prague.
The Czech painter, teacher and collector Vojtěch Chytil and his collection of modern Chinese painting in the 1920s and 1930s
Date:17 January 2019 (Thur)
Time:5:30pm – 7:00pm
Venue:Lecture Theatre 4, Cheng Yu Tung Building, CUHK
Medium:English
Vojtěch Chytil belonged to the European enthusiasts, who traveled to the Far East in the inter-war period, settled in China and became enamoured with her culture and art. Being an artist himself, Chytil had a unique position among European lovers of Chinese art. During his tenure at the Beijing Art College in the 1920s, he befriended artists such as Qi Baishi, Chen Banding, and Xiao Sun, and subsequently formed one of the largest collections of their paintings in his time. He took his collection to Europe and showed it in more than twenty European capitals and cultural centres. The talk will discuss the unique situation that lead to the formation of Chytil’s collection, some of the most important artworks in his collection and its legacy after Chytil’s premature death in 1936. It will be lavishly illustrated with the masterpieces from the holdings of the National Gallery in Prague, as well as with old photographs and archival materials from a number of public and private collections.
